So I am currently working full-time for the city that I grew up in. Lately, I have grown dissatisfied with my job, and my compensation (which won't change anytime soon, due to a salary freeze). In my frustration, I applied for a similar job that pays 12% more, and it's two hours away. They just called me to set up an interview. It was fun to dream about a different job, but now that it's a real possibility, I'm not sure what to think. It'll be hard to get out of work for an interview, but I'm sure I can do it. I'll have to lie, because I'll be asked why I need time off. I am interested in this new potential job, but I want to make sure I don't burn any bridges with my current employer, in case I want to come back in the future. Also, it's my hometown, so I have lots of connections here that I don't want to sour by leaving ungracefully. How would you handle this situation? Stay at the current job and be patient for an opportunity for advancement? Or pursue this new job at the risk of burning bridges with my current employer, which I have a strong connection with?
