The owners of a Lincoln Park nursing home who are facing a lawsuit over employees who allegedly stole $750, 000 from a 99-year-old woman are seeking to bar her court-appointed guardian from talking to the media. Owners of Symphony Residences of Lincoln Park contend such communications between Cook County Public Guardian Charles Golbert and reporters could taint a jury pool. Golbert took emergency custody of Grace Watanabe, who has dementia, and removed her from the nursing home in 2018 after the alleged theft came to light. A civil lawsuit he filed on her behalf seeking to recover the money is pending. While not accused of taking part in the theft, the lawsuit alleges nursing home executives were aware of it and didn't report it to law enforcement. The motion, filed in September, points to a Chicago Sun-Times story published in September 2019 in which Golbert accused the owners of the nursing home of attempting to delay litigation by refusing to sit for depositions. "It's not clear how much longer she'll be with us, " Golbert said in the article.

LIVONIA, Michigan — At a convent near Detroit, 13 nuns have died of COVID-19. The toll is seven at a center for Maryknoll sisters in New York, and six at a Wisconsin convent that serves nuns with fading memories. Each community perseveres, though strict social-distancing rules have made communal solidarity a challenge as the losses are mourned. Only small, private funeral services were permitted as the death toll mounted in April and May at the Felician Sisters convent in Livonia, Michigan — a spiritual hardship for the surviving nuns. "The yearnings, throughout the pandemic, were to be with our dying sisters and hold our traditional services, funeral Mass and burial, to comfort each other, " said Sister Mary Christopher Moore, a leader of the Felician Sisters of North America. For weeks the Livonia nuns went without Mass and dined in shifts, only one per table. Those and other restrictions have eased in recent weeks as regular activities slowly resume. But strict social-distancing rules remain in effect at the Our Lady of the Angels convent in Greenfield, Wisconsin, which provides memory care for nuns of the School Sisters of St. Francis and the School Sisters of Notre Dame.

Kyle Stengle, senior vice president of investments for the commercial brokerage firm Marcus and Millichap, which handling the sale, said the building could be bought and used as it is now — commercially and residentially — or there is potential for a buyer to apply for a zoning change and develop a larger building at the location. If the building does sell, Dinkel said he's looking at a number of options to continue to serve baked goods, including remaining in a small part of the building. Dinkel said other considerations include moving to a drive-thru business model, or transforming into an exclusively mail-order operation. "If we sold the building, I would want to make sure that the people buying the building were going to make it better for the community, " Dinkel said. The sale is the first step in a "million-mile journey" according to Dinkel, and the decision wasn't an easy one to make. "It's got a lot of history, a lot of nostalgia, " Dinkel said. "I think the bakery is selling more than baked goods, we're selling stability in a very unstable world. "
